30/03/2013

Water, our planet is covered in the stuff but only 2.5 percent of it is fresh and safe to drink. To make matters worse, less than 1 percent of the world’s fresh water can be accessed by people with rest of it lying deep in the earth’s crust or frozen at the icecaps.

Global warming may be heating things up but these tips to save water will keep you cool this summer!

1.       Don’t have a cow or be too much of a piggy

By committing to Meat Free Mondays, you could save about 3360l of water per week! So don’t be chicken, give it a go. Head to www.supportmfm.co.za and take the pledge, you will receive recipes and a personalised certificate.

2.       If its yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down!

Each time you flush 9 litres of water go down the drain. So only flush when necessary.

3.       Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth

A quick blast of water on your toothbrush is all you need to keep those gums healthy. This can save up to 100 litres a month.

4.       Shorten your shower

By taking a minute or two off your shower you can save up to 600 litres a month.

5.       Ditch the dishwasher

Getting your scrub on will save loads of water and keep your electricity bill on the down low. Also, yellow latex is all the rage in Parys this summer!

6.       Don’t kick the cube

If you drop some ice cubes on the floor, don’t kick them under the fridge (yes I know you do it), rather pop them in a house plant.

7.       Wee in the shower

I know it sounds gross but hey, it all goes to the same place in the end! It has been estimated that a household would save an incredible 5000 litres of water a year because of the fewer flushes.
