Transitioning to Spring in Southern Africa

04/09/2022

Welcome to September.

This is usually known as the month of spring to most of us down here in the Southern Hemisphere. A time when the seeds start sprouting, the shoots appear and we are filled with excitement, enthusiasm and motivation. Use this positive energy to your benefit now, but don’t get caught in the trap of burn out!

Be sure to take things slow and steady, take care of your health and find the right pace for here.

Here are my 6 Spring Tips that will help keep you balanced and on track

Tip 1:

Be sure to enjoy a hearty lunch packed with nutrition which your digestive system can process throughout the day.

Make sure you stick to having an earlier, lighter dinner even when the days start to become a little longer. Your digestion will love you for doing this!

Tip 2:

As we move from the cold and wet winter to warmer weather it is a good idea to experiment with lighter oils like sunflower and sweet almond when you do your self massage.

If you find your skin is too oily, leave out the oil and go straight into dry brushing. Try, test, learn, implement. There is no rule when it comes to self massage and oils. What worked last year, may not be what will suit or work for you this year. Be open to experimentation and see which oils your body is drawn to!

Tip 3:

At the end of winter, you probably have a buildup of cold and stagnation in your lymph, lungs and fat. Moving daily is a great way to remove this stagnation.

Walk, run, skip, dance… do something dynamic every day to get you moving and grooving!!!

Tip 4:

Take 10 minutes every evening to declutter an area of your house, work space, car and even your garden to bring clarity and space into your life.

Instead of having a later dinner, take that time to declutter an area of your home. Prepare your veggies and pulses for the next day already. Get yourself organised. There is nothing better than starting a day, know what tasks you need to complete.

Tip 5:

Find time to quieten the busy mind by focussing on a meditation that connects you with the pulsation of the universe.

Just because it’s getting lighter earlier doesn’t mean you can forfeit your meditation practice. Feel and connect to the universal pulsation to experience a sense of collaboration instead of isolation.

Tip 6:

To reduce the impacts of spring allergies take care of your nose by using your neti pot (to dry out if runny) or nasya oils (to lubricate if too dry).

Taking care of our senses, especially our nose, helps us to prevent the allergy causing allergens of wrecking havoc on our system.

These are my 6 spring tips for you. I find that living in Southern Africa that this time of year can vary so much. There can be really cold days, hot days, rainy days, windy days… there doesn’t seem to be too much regularity, the only regularity is that there is irregularity 😂.

So the best way to navigate these changes is to be sure that we’re taking care of our health and not leaving it up to chance.
